WHERE IS MATH?

WHY MATH IS BEING TAUGHT?

Have you ever wondered about the purpose behind learning mathematics? I can still recall my first encounter with numbers and counting in pre-school. However, at that age, no one ever explained to me why it was important to learn them, not even my parents or teachers. I have vivid memories of my mom asking me to buy groceries from a nearby convenience store. My task was to take the money, inquire about the costs, purchase the groceries, and return with the correct change. But how did she know if I did the math correctly? I had to remember the prices and ensure that I returned the correct change. It was at the age of 7 when I had my first lesson about money, coincidentally my first real-world application of mathematics.

Discovering the pervasive presence of Math is a truly empowering experience. Even more significant is my passion for enlightening others about the beauty and relevance of Math, which serves as the primary motivation behind this website.

My Own Story in Math Education

My Math education was heavily focused on theory, leaving little room for exposure to the practical applications of mathematics. While I did encounter some real-world examples in textbooks, they felt disconnected from the everyday situations where math can be applied. It wasn't until my first year of graduate school that I mustered the courage to ask the question that had been nagging me for years: "Why are we learning this, and when will I use it?"

During a combinatorics class, after learning several counting methods, I finally decided to seek an answer. I approached my professor, Dr. Florien Pfender, during his office hours, and asked him the question that had been weighing on my mind. His response was enlightening: "Combinatorics helps us figure out the computing cost when inventing or improving algorithms. If the cost is too high, we know we need to change our approach." I was grateful not only for his thoughtful response but also for his willingness to address the question in front of the entire class.

Since then, I have made it my mission to collect examples of applied mathematics in daily life that people can relate to. My goal is to demonstrate the practical relevance of mathematics and to help people understand the "Why" of learning mathematics. Through this website, I hope to provide ideas and inspiration for how mathematics can be used in our lives and perhaps help others develop a greater appreciation for the subject.
